The faces & stories behind the
Bebas Card Project
Ibu Ketut
Ibu Ketut
Ibu Ketut is married with one little boy and has just recently had to start working 3 days a week as a house helper. She has appreciated the extra little bit coming in from the cards that she makes in her spare time as the money helps provide for her family. Her husband earns a very minimal wage of $5 a day as a labourer. Ibu Ketut is very smart and so is her son. She did not have the opportunity to go to high school and receive a secondary education because her family could not afford it, so now she is determined to provide a good education and as many opportunities she can for her son. The money raised from these cards enables her to think of his future and make it possible.
Ibu Kadek
Ibu Kadek
Ibu Kadek is a mother of two little boys - 4 year old Agus and her 1 yr old baby Made. She was raised in a poor village in the mountains of Bali. Ibu Kadek looks after her children by herself as she was badly treated by her husband. Ibu Kadek is very grateful to be a part of the Bebas Card Project and to have this opportunity to make money to provide for her family as she is alone and its very tough without the support of a husband.
Ibu Komang
Ibu Komang
Ibu Komang, her husband and little girl Dia live in a koskosan (one small building that houses many poor families). Ibu Komang also cares for and provides for her mother who is sick and blind. This is very difficult as her husband makes a measly $70AUD per month and she is also very grateful that she has an opportunity to make some extra much-needed funds through the Bebas Card Project to help care for her mother and also provide the basic nessecities for her own family.
Ibu Komang
Ibu Komang
Ibu Komang has a big heart. Although busy with her own family (she is a mother to three girls) she also runs a group for women from her village that have many physical needs. She sits with them and shares life with them regularly and she is very grateful that she has the opportunity to help people not only physically but emotionally and spiritually as well. She assists these women in making cards. As most of the women in her group are wives of men that are very strict, they are not allowed out of the house. Bebas Card Project allows these women to have freedom to work and have time with other women also.
Ibu Ayu
Ibu Ayu
Ibu Ayu is a single mum with two young children David and Olive she has suffered extreme hardship in her life as her ex partner was in jail. Although her life is full of struggles she sees that there is hope for her and her children and being involved in this project helps her to see the light at the end of the tunnel. As she is able to pay for her children's education etc and is able to work from home whilst spending time with them.
Ibu Ima
Ibu Ima
Ibu Ima is originally from Java and is a widow with 2 young children. Because of unpaid debt her husband accumulated when he was alive she now has to work in Bali as a house helper to pay off his debt. She lives very simply as her wage is so small, and all the money she makes is sent home to her children and mother who look after them for her. She is very grateful she has recently been given the opportunity to make cards and make a little extra money to pay off the debt and hopefully one day will be able to return home to be with her children.
